I spoke with Leo’s owner, Laura, about how their paths crossed.
“Leo is 22 years old. I got him when he was 6. He is a thoroughbred, he raced from 3-4 years of age. He was hurt on the track and had a small break on his leg a little bit above his saveloy. It wasn’t weight bearing. When we got him, we put him in a field for a year. The lady I got him from, she had him for 2 months, so we bought him as a 6 year old. He could trot across rail at that time and he has been my hunter equitation horse up to the 3’6”. I brought him with me to college, so he’s educated. I brought him home with me every break. I’ve had him for 16 years now, it feels like not enough time. He’s mostly retired now. I rode him yesterday just for fun. He jumped a lot of big jumps in his life, so now he’s just living the good life.
Six years ago, my sister convinced me to move here to Zionsville and she said I could bring him. We like to ride together. Leo has jumped his whole life until the last few years. He’s just a little old now. I give him a hard time, but he’s the perfect horse. It broke my heart to have to retire him. He’s such a sweet boy. I like to take him out and let him wander around and trail ride. He has a kissing spine now. Kissing spine is when two or more bony projections at the top of the vertebrae touch or overlap. He’s had it his whole life. It’s better to keep his muscles up. But he likes to trail ride and yesterday I tacked him in full tack, I usually ride him back back just for fun. I joke that his nice cdw expensive bridle never gets used and I only let him wear it. He’s probably worn it a dozen times. He’s such a good boy. He’s for sure my heart horse. His tattoo is on me. He has tattoos because he was a race horse.”
